Grandin Temples Report

Don't count on somebody else to get this done.  There are thousands of us on the horse rescue sites but not enough people making the calls.  There is much work to be done for any hope of getting new House bill, H.R.6598, passed this session.  Otherwise, we will need to start all over again when the new legislature convenes in January and we will have wasted another year.  Although the current members of Congress are on summer break until September, there are still aides in their Washington offices that are in contact.

Below are names of House members that did NOT support H.R.503 and so far have NOT co-sponsored H.R.6598.  If you have never made a call before, please do so now. The toll free numbers are
1-800-828-0498, 1-800-614-2803 or 1-800-459-1887.  If you don't know exactly what to say or want to do more, such as faxing or emailing letters, please visit the web site

Call List For The Week Of  8/3/08

KEYING IN ON JUDICIARY COMMITTEE MEMBERS

This week we will focus on the Judiciary Committee, where H.R. 6598 currently resides.  I have listed all 16 of the 40 members of this Committee who did not co-sponsor H.R.503.  The first group of 10 are members we did not call last week, when we concentrated on the members of a Subcommittee of the Judiciary.  The last 6 are a repeat of the Subcommittee members that did not co-sponsor H.R.503.  If we are going to be successful this time, we must retain our H.R.503 co-sponsors and, very importantly, pick up several additional House members.

Here's the list:

Phone calls and faxes are both good. Summer break is upon us, so you may find it easier to send a web mail. You can find web mail information at http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/. If you would like more information concerning this bill, how to make phone calls or what to say in your calls or letters, please see the web site http://www.endinghorseslaughter.com. On that site, you will also find a list of the 24 Representatives who have co-sponsored so far.....

NEW BILL, NEW STRATEGY

The brand new House bill H.R.6598 (known as the Prevention Of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008, introduced on 7/24/08 by Sen. John Conyers) is currently in the House Judiciary Committee, where it will be deliberated, investigated and/or revised.  This is just the beginning of the legislative process for this bill.

The Judiciary Committee Chair and sponsor of the bill, Sen. Conyers, has sent the bill to the Subcommittee On Crime, Terrorism And Homeland Security.  This Subcommittee has jurisdiction over border security, international agreements, non-border enforcement, international law, etc. Their first meeting to discuss the bill will be held on Thursday this week at 9:30 AM.  Therefore, we should direct our calls and letters to the members of the Subcommittee.  The members with an asterisk beside their names did not co-sponsor H.R.503, a similar House bill.  They should be called first!

To all who have taken that extra step to try to keep our horses off the slaughter trucks, bless you!   All of us working together really are making a difference.   We are no longer in the minority.  Americans don't want slaughter.
